Bitmain's S21 family is the default choice for new Bitcoin mining capacity in 2026 — but the three models target very different buyers. Pick wrong and you either overpay for efficiency you can't use, or buy hashrate that can't survive the next difficulty adjustments. Here's the honest breakdown.
The lineup at a glance
- Antminer S21 — 200 TH/s at 3,550 W (~17.5 J/TH). The entry ticket: cheapest per unit, least efficient.
- Antminer S21 Pro — 234 TH/s at 3,510 W (~15.0 J/TH). The balanced workhorse and currently the volume seller.
- Antminer S21 XP — 270 TH/s at 3,645 W (~13.5 J/TH). Flagship efficiency, flagship price.
Price per TH: what you're actually paying for
Street prices move weekly, but the pattern is stable: the S21 is the cheapest machine per unit, while the XP is usually the cheapest per terahash of efficient hashrate over a full ownership cycle. As a rule of thumb from our vendor network this month:

- At $0.06–0.07/kWh (good hosting): all three are profitable; the Pro offers the best balance of capex and margin.
- At $0.04–0.05/kWh (industrial hosting): the base S21's lower purchase price can pay back faster — efficiency matters less when power is cheap.

At current network conditions and $0.07/kWh hosting power, expect roughly: S21 around 14–18 months, S21 Pro around 13–16 months, S21 XP around 15–20 months (higher capex). These compress in bull markets and stretch when difficulty outruns price — treat any payback promise under 12 months with suspicion.
Which one for which buyer?
- Home miner with cheap power (under $0.08/kWh): none of these, honestly — look at quieter home-class units. If power is nearly free (solar surplus), the base S21.
- First hosted machine: S21 Pro. Best availability, easiest resale, healthy margin at standard hosting rates.
- Filling a rack, 2+ year horizon: S21 XP. Efficiency is the only durable hedge against difficulty growth.
- Tight capex, cheap power secured: base S21 — put the savings into more hashrate.
