Hydro-cooled and immersion-cooled ASICs promise higher efficiency, lower noise and longer chip life, but they also need tanks, plumbing, dielectric fluid and a hosting partner that actually knows how to handle them. For most buyers the real question is not "which cooling is better?" but "at what electricity rate does hydro pay back its extra complexity?" This breakdown uses the current site data snapshot — SHA-256 hashprice at $0.03199 per TH per day, BTC near $64,700, and live prices from our price feed — to give an honest answer.
The hydro models in the spotlight
Our catalog currently tracks two Bitmain hydro units that get the most quote requests:
- Antminer S21 XP Hyd — 473 TH/s at 5,676 W, which is roughly 12.0 J/TH. The current spot price in our feed is $1,026.
- Antminer S21 Hyd — 335 TH/s at 5,360 W, or about 16.0 J/TH. The current spot price in our feed is $3,299.
For comparison against air-cooled siblings, the Antminer S21 Pro is listed at 234 TH/s and 3,510 W (~15.0 J/TH) with a spot price of $2,770, while the base Antminer S21 is 200 TH/s at 3,500 W (~17.5 J/TH) at $1,499. An older hydro reference point is the Antminer S19 XP Hyd at 255 TH/s and 5,304 W (~20.8 J/TH), currently around $1,283.

- S21 Hyd: ~$0.083/kWh

The S21 XP Hyd wins this chart because of its 12 J/TH efficiency. That gives it a meaningful safety margin over most air-cooled machines. The S21 Hyd, despite being hydro-cooled, is less efficient per joule than the air-cooled S21 Pro, so its break-even rate is lower. Cooling method alone does not guarantee better economics; the generation and tuning of the chips matter more.
Payback periods at real hosting rates

The S21 XP Hyd is the obvious standout, mainly because the current spot price is unusually low for a 12 J/TH machine. That price may reflect refurbished, bulk or time-limited stock, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a guarantee. The S21 Hyd pays back slower because its purchase price is high relative to its daily margin, even with cheap hydro hosting.
When does hydro actually beat air cooling?
Hydro and immersion make sense in specific situations, not as a default choice:
- You already have cheap industrial power. If you are paying $0.04–0.05/kWh, the most efficient machine — usually the newest hydro unit — converts that cheap power into the most bitcoin per dollar of electricity.
- You are running at scale. The tank, pumps, heat exchanger and fluid are a fixed setup cost. Spread across one or two machines they can erase the savings; spread across a rack or container they become trivial per unit.
- Noise and heat matter. Hydro units dump heat into fluid that can be routed outside, so the machine room is far quieter and cooler than an air-cooled farm. This is why many residential-adjacent sites and cold-climate farms prefer them.
- You want to overclock. Immersion stabilizes temperatures and often lets operators push chips harder than air cooling allows. The extra hashrate can justify the cooling capex, but it also voids warranties if done aggressively.
Hidden costs that erase the headline efficiency
Do not compare only the sticker price and the J/TH number. Hydro ownership has extra line items:
- Cooling infrastructure: tanks, manifolds, pumps, filtration and dielectric fluid can add hundreds to thousands of dollars per machine depending on scale.
- Hosting compatibility: not every data center supports hydro. Choosing hydro limits your facility options and can increase transport cost.
- Maintenance skill: draining, refilling and leak prevention are not optional. A small leak is expensive; a large one can destroy a machine.
- Resale market: air-cooled machines have more buyers. Hydro units often sell back into a narrower pool of operators who already own the cooling stack.
Bottom line for buyers
With current hashprice and prices, the Antminer S21 XP Hyd is the clear math winner for hydro — but only if you can source it near the current $1,026 spot price and host it under $0.07/kWh. The Antminer S21 Hyd is harder to justify unless you get a meaningful discount or need hydro for operational reasons like noise and heat. Air-cooled machines such as the S21 Pro still offer simpler logistics, broader resale and competitive break-even rates around $0.089/kWh.
